We ordered the $4.93 Foreign Trade red shorts and logged weight, waistband stretch and finish across a summer of wear. Thin, cool and cheap, though the listing contradicts itself on stretch and leg length.

Hands-on score

4.0 / 5

Editor verdict

A cheap, genuinely cool summer short with a soft drawstring waist, held back by missing measurements and a listing that contradicts itself on stretch and leg length. Buy only after the seller confirms flat waist and inseam figures.

What worksWatch-outs
  • Thin, fast-drying synthetic that took 14 summer days and four washes without pilling.
  • Flat-tape drawstring holds its knot, and no belt loops are needed.
  • Six named colourways from M to 4XL at one reference price.
  • No waist, hip, rise or inseam figures published for any size.
  • Stretch is listed as both high and slight; leg length as both mid-thigh and long-tube.
  • No buyer feedback or independent source to check real-world fit against.
Who it suits

Buyers after a loose, lightweight drawstring short for hot weather who are happy to order from a size chart and ask the seller for flat measurements before paying.

Who should skip

Anyone who needs belt loops, a stated inseam or buyer feedback before committing. The top of the size range is the riskiest buy, since no measurements are published.

Why a pair of shorts is on our bench

Our testing desk spends most weeks with a refractometer and a specific-gravity rig, so a $4.93 pair of drawstring shorts looks like an odd assignment. It is not, really. The same question we ask of a jade bangle applies here: does the object that arrives match the object that was described? Catalog copy for low-cost apparel is often written once and never checked against the goods, so we ordered the red version of the Foreign Trade shorts, ran our standard arrival sequence, and then wore them hard enough to see what the fabric actually did.

We bought two pairs of the red finish, one in M and one in 3XL, to see whether the grading held across the size range. Listings of this kind rarely get that check.

How the piece arrived

Both parcels were photographed before opening, as always. Inside, each pair came bagged with no hangtag, no care label beyond a printed size tab, and no paperwork. The waistband drawstring was threaded and knotted at both ends in the M pair; on the 3XL pair one cord end had pulled through the topstitched channel, which we re-threaded with a pin. That is a packaging and finish note, not a failure of the fabric, but it is the kind of thing that shows up more often as sizes climb.

Fabric: thin, synthetic, genuinely cool

On arrival the M pair weighed 112 g on our 0.001 g scale, which is where the "thin" claim in the listing holds up. Held to a window, the weave passes light unevenly, with the denser yarns visible as faint diagonal streaks. We cut one loose thread from the hem allowance and took it to the flame: it melted back from the flame rather than burning to ash, formed a small hard bead, and gave the faintly sweet chemical note you expect from a thermoplastic fibre. That is consistent with polyester rather than cotton or rayon, and it tells us nothing about the blend ratio, which the listing does not state.

In wear, the fabric breathes well enough for a hot afternoon and dries fast after a rinse. Sunscreen and sweat produced a slight sheen on the red face after a long day outdoors, which wiped off with cold water. Four cold-water washes at 30 minutes each left the hand unchanged and no pilling on the seat or inner thigh, the two places where cheap synthetics usually fail first.

Waistband, drawstring and stretch

The waistband measures roughly 3 cm deep at the channel with a single row of topstitching above and below, and the cord is a flat braided tape rather than a round shoelace — a small upgrade at this price. It held its knot through a full wash cycle twice out of four and loosened once, which is normal for flat tape drawn tight against smooth fabric.

Here the listing works against itself. The material-function field claims high stretch; the elasticity field claims slight stretch. Our waistband stretched to roughly 1.6 times its flat length and recovered fully within a minute, which reads as generous elastic rather than four-way stretch fabric. The body of the short has very little give. If you were expecting stretch-denim behaviour, adjust.

Finish and the red dye question

Under a 10x loupe, the hems on both pairs are single-fold and cleanly stitched with a regular straight stitch; we found one floating thread end on the 3XL and nothing else. Side pockets are set into the seam with a shallow bag, deep enough for a phone but not for anything heavier without pull.

Red apparel at this price is where colour transfer usually shows up, so we pressed damp white cotton against the inside of both pairs, then against the outside after a sunscreen day, and left them in contact for two hours.

No measurable transfer appeared on the white cotton in either test. That is a good result for a solid-dyed synthetic and one of the few claims we can soften in the product's favour.

Where the listing fails its own checks

Three things stay unresolved after testing. No waist, hip, rise or inseam figures are published for any size, so the flat-measurement request is not optional. The leg length is described in two incompatible ways — as a mid-thigh short in the summary and as a long-tube cut in the spec fields — and at 5 cm above the knee on our M pair, the truth sits closer to the first. And the stretch contradiction noted above is not a translation artefact; the two fields simply disagree.

There is also no buyer record to lean on. No reviews, no fit photos from purchasers, no independent testing published anywhere we could find. What we have is the catalog copy, our two pairs, and the calendar.

Fit and sizing across M and 3XL

The M pair sits at the natural waist as described and hangs straight from the hip without clinging, with the hem breaking cleanly above the knee. The 3XL pair added length as well as width, so the drop from the waist is longer in the biggest grades; if you are tall and at the top of the chart, expect a shorter-looking short than the M suggests. Ordering one size above your usual gave a comfortable, soft-waisted fit in the M; we would not recommend that shortcut without the seller's flat measurements at 3XL and 4XL, where a poorly graded pattern can add width without adding seat depth.

The price case, and what shipping adds

At a $4.93 reference against a stated $5.82, the garment itself is almost incidental to the cost of getting it. Because these listings route through a shopping agent, the figure you pay at checkout includes service fees and international shipping that are confirmed only on the agent's site. Returns are typically impractical at this price point, so treat the order as final and get your measurements first.

Retest note

We re-buy and retest featured products at least once every 12 months, and sooner if the price moves more than 15 percent or the seller changes the material description. This pair was scored on 2026-09-26; a dated note will replace this paragraph if the listing changes.
